Zabuza Momochi is from the hidden village of Kiri, in the Water Country. This village practiced a particular method of selecting its genin (aspirants): each new graduate of the ninja academy had to compete against another new graduate, until one of the two perished. This method had to be seriously revised after Zabuza, not yet a graduate of the academy, slaughtered the 100 or so genin who were taking the exam that year (at the memory of this slaughter, Zabuza claims that “it was fun”).
