Godzilla Resurgence (also known as Shin Godzilla) is a Japanese science fiction film directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, released in 2016.
It is the twenty-ninth installment (and a reboot) of the Godzilla saga that began in 1954. Just like the original film, the creature is portrayed as a result of nuclear contamination. It is also a satire of how the Japanese government handles national crises, directly referencing the 2011 Thoku earthquake and tsunami.
The Japanese Coast Guard investigates an abandoned yacht in Tokyo Bay. Their ship is destroyed and the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is flooded. After watching a viral video of the incident, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Rando Yaguchi theorizes that it was caused by a living creature.
