Godzilla is a Japanese kaij film directed by Ishir Honda, released in 1954, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. It pioneered a style of special effects known as *daikaiju*, in which a stunt actor in a suit interacts with miniature sets, and is recognized as a defining model for *tokusatsu* (special effects films).

Produced and distributed by Th, the film tells the story of mysterious sinkings of large ships off the coast of Odo Island, located south of Japan. On the island, terrifying damage also occurs at night, with villagers and houses seemingly “crushed from above.” The ancient local legend of “Godzilla” is revived the tale of a creature living beneath the sea that awakens to “feed on humanity.”
