The crotch strap is seen as the fundamental part of a balanced rig, whether a single tank or twin set, by most divers. The crotch strap runs from under the backplate, under the crotch and up to the front waist harness, allowing the rig to remain in perfect balance and stability during the dive.

Most drysuit divers would wear their weight belts (if used) under the crotch strap and practice a two-stage emergency release to avoid accidental loss or dropping of weights.
