Gol D. Roger, better known as Gold Roger, was the previous and only Pirate King and the former owner of the legendary treasure, the One Piece.

Roger and Whitebeard were more rivals than enemies. Their crews clashed several times, as shown in the Wano Arc. They came to know each other through repeated battles, even becoming friends at times.

For a while, Newgate held a grudge against Roger for taking in his “little brother,” Kozuki Oden, but after overcoming this resentment, they became good friends, though they remained rivals.

Due to their status as rivals, they fought many times, clashing with weapons imbued with Conquerors Haki, engaging in fierce battles that destroyed everything in their path.
